Social Practices

The practice of Falun Gong differs form that of the Buddhist teachings as it places greater value on the non-spiritual world. Those practicing Falun Gong are expected to have normal jobs and families, adhere to the laws of where they live and to maintain an active part in society. The only exception to the rule is monks and nuns who continue to live their reclusive lifestyles and practice Falun Gong.

It is important to live as ethically as possible under the Falun Gong way of living. They are to live by strict morals, always be truthful, complete good deeds, be patient and show forbearance in the face of difficulties. For instance if a person that practices Falun Gung is attacked or insulted they must not attack or insult back. They must refrain from negative thoughts and behaviour such as greed or jealousy and alcohol and smoking are considered detrimental to a person’s health and wellbeing. They must not kill any living creature for food, although they don’t need to become vegetarians.

Also, those practicing Falun Gong should not seek wealth or desire and should not become greedy or pursue fame, or seek material items. They are taught to be frugal with money and work hard in their jobs and they should not get attached to physical possessions. Sex should only be practiced in a male/female marriage, and sexual practice out of this would be considered immoral. There is no rule that gay and lesbian people cannot practice Falun Gong but homosexuality is considered to create karma, therefore it isn’t in line with the teachings of the practice.

Falun Gong teachings say that every ethnicity around the world corresponds to their own heaven and that people who are of mixed races may lose some of this connection. Although Falun Gong does believe that being of mixed race will not affect a person’s soul or their ability to progress in their Falun Gong journey. There are no official teachings about interracial marriage and there are many interracial children among those that practice Falun Gong.

The teachings of Falun Gong also tell its followers not to take part in any political or social issues. Having a keen interest in politics can be seen as wanting power and influence, which goes against Falun Gong beliefs. The teachings and exercises seek to purify the individual and advise its followers not to partake in any social or nation changes.Unlike other religions Falun Gong does not believe in any kind of social reform.
